What is Creative?
YOU are creative. You are a creative being, whether you or anyone else sees you as creative or not. Being creative is not restricted to being artistic.
I remember having conversations before about the differences of being a structural type of thinker or a generative one, which is to say predominantly "right-brained" or "left-brained". I remember some people being very adamant that they were right-brained because they liked to be creative and got a little touchy when it was suggested that they came across as being far more of the structural type of thinker.
Here’s the truth. It doesn’t matter whether you’re right or left handed, right or left brained or right or wrong for that matter; we all are both. We all have both a left and right side of our brains, so it is sense to see that you can develop the usage of either part of your mind – the logical side or the creative side and it is essential to have command of both in order to be creative. Forget about typical stereotypes of what a creative person is supposed to be like.
In fact, many artists draw inspiration from what they already know and what already exists as created by artists before them. This is creativity that largely depends on logic (what is already known and proven), so it’s fair to say that some artists are no more creative than somebody who can organise a big corporate event or a good secretary. There is definitely an art to be found in organization – although you probably won’t find it in me!
Creativity comes from dropping certain known quantities and looking for new possibilities. At first they may seem illogical, but often the best discoveries and inventions that we now see perfect logic in started out as "Crazy ideas".
I think the most important part to being creative is to abolish the fear of what people may think of your suggestions and ideas. With less resistance to your "crackpot" ideas, you are more likely to express them and see them through to, perhaps, world-changing fruition. Don’t let anyone tell you aren’t or you can’t be creative (including yourself).
